A ‘portion’ is a part or share of something larger: an individual’s part or share of something: such as a share of a gift or an inheritance.
The Earth is the Lord’s and its fullness thereof, the world, including all the people that live in it (Psalm 24:1). The world has been divided by God into allotments, these have been given to mankind in the form of nations, societies, clans and individuals.
When the Israelites got to the Promised Land, the chief duty of Joshua was to divide the land among the people. The land was divided into allotments for tribes, then clans, then head of families, and then adult males. Such that every man had a portion.
Therefore as in other versions of the bible, ‘portion’ can be translated as ‘inheritance’. When certain writers say the Lord is their portion, what they mean in essence is that the Lord is their allotment in life, their inheritance, their source of security, and their hope for eternity.
The ‘Double Portion’ is a term used by the Law of Moses to describe the size of inheritance allocated to an Israelite’s firstborn son. The firstborn’s birthright is a double portion of a man’s inheritance in comparison to what he gave his other children (twice as many or twice as much), as well as the responsibilities of leading the household once the father had passed on.
The ‘double portion’ therefore is the heritage – ‘the blessing’ that was appointed by Moses for the firstborn son, because he must take his father’s place as the head of the house. It is the legal right exclusively reserved for the firstborn son in their generation. It is intended so that the firstborn son should be greater than the rest, and as such command due respect and honour.
However, by Divine providence or Divine assistance, the scripture makes us to know that there were certain individuals who enjoyed the blessing of the double portion, even though they were not firstborn sons.
It was God that programmed and orchestrated situations and circumstances around such individuals, such that they became candidates of double portion somehow. The special favours of God rested upon them. The double portion that was supposed to be given to another person, was surprisingly passed on to them.
For example, Esau and Jacob were the first twins to be born on Earth. Esau was privileged to come out first from their mother’s womb, which conferred the birthright of the firstborn on him. So, even though he and Jacob were born few minutes or few hours apart, he was to still be accorded that special status and the blessings that come with it.
Interestingly, while the boys were still in their mother’s womb, God had revealed what kind of destiny they would have. It was written that the younger son – Jacob would be the recipient of the double portion blessing (Gen. 25: 19-23).
It happened that as the boys grew into men, one day, Esau made a foolish and irreversible blunder. He sold his by chanced firstborn birthright to Jacob for a bowl of food, when he returned famished from hunting game. From that point onward, Esau did not fully comprehend that he was no more the candidate for the double portion blessing of the father (Gen. 25:27-34).
When the time eventually came for the double portion blessing to be released by their father, Esau tried to present his head, with Issac – their father’s prompting. God however mysteriously granted Jacob Divine assistance, such that somehow, Isaac released the double portion blessing on Jacob’s head, before Esau and Isaac could realise what they had done (Gen. 27:1-40).
In this second month of this year, what the Lord has laid in my heart is that He will grant us assistance to enjoy double portion blessings of the Father.
God will grant us the privileges of the ‘firstborn’.
He will make us candidates for His sonship birthright.
He will carve out portions of inheritances for us on here on the earth.
He will increase our ‘allotments’ twofold.
God will secure all what He has already given to us.
He will make us to enjoy special favours with Him and with mankind.
He will help us not to fall into any error of losing any of our inheritances.
Our head will be conditioned by God not to refuse nor reject our predestined privileges and blessings.
God will take us to the level of abundance and the levels of more than enough.
The Lord will discomfit those who are competing for our birthrights.
Those who are envious of our favours will find themselves in self-induced errors that can not reversed.
Where earthly men have tried to sideline us, God of the whole universe will somehow present us forward miraculously.
Those who are trying to present their own heads for what rightfully belongs to us will be mysteriously edged out by God.
May God fulfil these and many more blessings in our lives and in our midst in Jesus mighty name.
