September 2019 Theme – Revisiting Purpose And Calling

Revisit can be defined as “To visit again; to reconsider; to return; go or come back to place, condition, or activity where one has been before; to talk or think about something again, with the intention of improving it or changing it; to examine something again; to review; readdress; redefine; re-evaluate; etc.

Purpose can be defined as “The reason for which something is done or created, or reason for which something exists or was made; etc.

Calling can be defined as “A strong inner impulse towards a particular course of action, especially when accompanied by conviction of divine influence; an occupation; profession; career; mission; call; vocation; a strong inclination; etc.

Revisiting purpose and calling can, therefore, mean to reconsider the reason why we were made; or re-evaluate our inner impulse towards our call, with the intention of making improvements.

In I Sam. 10:1-27, Samuel anointed Saul as the first king over Israel in secret. It was only Samuel and Saul that knew. Samuel later asked all Israel to gather in Mizpah, to formalise the choice in front of them. He asked them to be grouped in their tribes, and within tribes, they should divide into families. He then began to cast a lot. The tribe of Benjamin was chosen by lot; out of that, the family of Matri was chosen, within that, Saul the son of Kish was chosen. But Saul had hidden. They searched for him to no avail. God had to reveal where he was hiding. He was then introduced to everyone. Samuel, however, falls short of anointing him in front of the whole congregation, and everyone departed. It was only a few devoted men that followed Saul home; while some of the people despised him.

In I Sam. 11:1-15, Saul was able to lead an army of 330,000 to defeat the Ammonites and as such all Israel began to sing the praise of Saul. Samuel then asked them to gather in Gilgal to revisit the issue of the kingdom, and there they coronated Saul as the king officially. They made the sacrifice of peace offerings to God, and all Israel rejoiced greatly.

This month, God has laid it in my heart that we must all revisit our individual and collective purpose and calling. We are to re-examine the reason for which we are created and why we exist. We must also re-evaluate our inner conviction towards our call, mission, vocation, service, etc with the intention of improving or making a change. May God receive our ‘sacrifices’ and make us rejoice greatly in Jesus name.
